Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the sale price by the sales tax rate (as a decimal). For example, $100 × 8.5% = $8.50 in tax, making your total $108.50. Our calculator does this automatically for every US state.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska does allow local sales taxes, so check local rates if selling there.

What is the highest sales tax state?

Combining state rates with average local rates (as of July 2026), Louisiana, Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas and Alabama have the highest combined rates, all above 9%.

Do I need to collect sales tax on all my sales?

It depends on whether you have "nexus" in a state — meaning a sufficient business presence or sales volume that triggers a collection obligation. Most states use a $100,000 sales threshold; a few set a higher amount, and some also count transactions. Sails can help you track your nexus across all states.

Are these rates accurate for my city or ZIP code?

No — these are state-level estimates (state rate + average local rate). Actual local taxes vary by city, county, and special district, so the rate at a specific address can be higher or lower. For an exact rate, use your state's official rate lookup.
